40′ Ta Shing “Panda” 1982, Refinished – $92,500

A beautiful 40’ cutter designed by Robert Perry and built by the exceptional craftsmen of Ta Shing Yacht Building Ltd. of Taiwan.  Considered a “pinnacle of the ‘Golden Age’ of Taiwanese yacht building”, she was sold brand new in Seattle in April 1982.  “New Hope” has had just one owner and has been meticulously maintained.

Her August 2023 full marine survey stated, “Exceptionally fine care by the current owners, pride of ownership abounds.”  Her original owner’s passion for their family’s boat is very evident. Beautiful hand-rubbed teak interior woodwork still near flawless, fine upholstery on settees and berths, regular and correct maintenance and upkeep all in evidence.  

“New Hope” has always been safely moored in freshwater and is a USCG Documented vessel. Truly a gem awaiting her next family’s ownership.

  ~ ~ “New Hope” Repairs and Renovations ~ ~

When we met the original owners at their Mercer Island dock, it was clear they had enjoyed so many great family memories aboard this lovely boat. It was also clear — simply given time, age and declining health since the onset of the Covid years — that she needed some serious restoration to her exterior appearance as a starting point. We accepted “New Hope” to our Foundation with our assurance to do all of that work. Once having seen our completed project late last summer, the former owners were overjoyed.

Since bringing her to our organization in March ’25, we’ve devoted more than five hundred hours last summer and fall just to completing the full exterior renovation and refinish. The Ta Shing had a recent haul out in 2023 and a full marine survey.  Surveyor noted a list of small repairs that needed to be addressed. Through the winter we replaced pumps and fittings as needed, carefully examined every bit of her electrical and plumbing systems and myriad other details as needed bsed on previous survey. She’s been throughly deep cleaned inside including engine compartment and bilges and the 4 cyl. Volvo diesel is running great. “New Hope” is now ready to go as a new summer sailing season arrives in the Northwest. We’re eager to pass her along to folks who will maintain her with the attention this distinguished sailboat deserves.

We’ve done the work new owners wouldn’t pay a boatyard to do. Now, you will be receiving this very fine traditional offshore sailboat … along with bragging rights at the docks in Rosario this July.

We are quite selective about the vessels we accept into our program and we pursue a very rigorous process before they are listed for sale. This begins when we first meet with our donors to discuss the condition and upkeep of their boat. Once accepted, each new arrival undergoes a thorough examination, similar to what a marine surveyor will do. This allows us to prioritize our attention to any deferred maintenance or repairs that may be needed.

Over the years we have performed just about every kind of marine repair, from electrical and plumbing issues to all types of appearance enhancements and rebuilding engines. If something is not working right we fix it, simple as that. We prove that her electrical, mechanical and plumbing systems are correct, safe and functioning properly. By doing all of this we know our boats quite well top to bottom and present them fairly and honestly to buyers.
