Navstar

Clarke Ryder, renowned builder of classic sailing boats, wrote about this 39′ Southern Cross:

“In 1980, to confirm theories as to how ancient mariners managed long sea journeys before sophisticated instruments were developed, Explorer Marvin Creamer commissioned our Bristol shop to build “NavStar”, a special factory finished Southern Cross 39. The 39 was designed by US Naval Academy marine architect Thomas Gillmer. Tom had designed the Seawind Ketch, the first fiberglass sailboat to sail around the world. Marvin successfully completed his historic trans-Atlantic voyage with no navigational instruments, just a thumb and a forefinger. (One would think that if you headed east from Newport you would eventually bump into something, but maybe it’s more complicated than that.) Marvin bumped into West Africa, confirming his theory. After completing this voyage, Navstar was upgraded with modern navigation equipment and many other conveniences.

“Her tall rig and 7.4 knot hull speed give Navstar excellent cruising performance, either along the coast or offshore. With her buoyant stern and significant freeboard, heavy weather sailing aboard Navstar is safe and enjoyable. Her Autohelm and Aries wind vane provide for easy short-handed sailing.

“Navstar is a double-ended auxiliary cutter with a cutaway keel and skeg-mounted rudder. Her Airex-cored hull provides exceptional rigidity and resiliency, as well as both sound and thermal insulation. She feels like a wooden boat.”

She’s made two trips to Bermuda single-handed, and though she’ll need some TLC after a season on the hard, she’s ready to go again.

Addenda

“Navstar” was given a professional deep cleaning inside and out this past Fall.  She is on the hard and shrink-wrapped with an access door for inspection.

Her former owner is an engineer who used her well, and designed a number of clever and essential systems to enable single-handed sailing, which also improved safety and operability throughout.

An October 2010 survey (conducted while the boat was stored) indicates there is NO evidence of hull blisters, good solid construction in all areas, fully operational systems and a general “clean bill of health”.

Pacific Marine Foundation is a large non profit organization located on the West coast and we have reps in Old Saybrook, CT. who will arrange an inspection of this boat with you.
